Wait...What's The Difference?

Strait Razors

A Straight Razor is a sharp blade that is not replaceable and is used for shaving that folds into a handle. The good thing about a straight razor is that it is cheaper in the long run because you don't have to keep replacing the blades. Then there is the feel, something about using a straight razor just feels right from how you have to maintain it, learn it, and take care of it. But that is also a negative because the amount of work is needed to maintain that edge, from using a wet stone then stropping as well as putting oil on the blade just isn't for me personally ( I ain't got the time for all that). Some folks find that routine relaxing and worthwhile though so it's all about what you are looking for.

A Shavette is a sharp blade that has replaceable blades that folds into the handle. It has the same form as a Strait Razor the only exception is that the blade is changeable which I think is perfect for beginners who want to dip their toe into the world of Straight Razors and Shavettes. You don't have to worry about sharpening or stropping, it gets dull just take out the used blade and put a brand-new one in and you're ready to go.

The Pros Of Using A Strait Razor or Shavette

I for one think that a Straight Razor or Shavette is the way to go for many reasons. For one it does come a lot cheaper than having to buy those razor cartridges all the time. It can cost between 6-8 dollars for a pack of 100 replaceable straight razor blades that will last you a very long time considering the cost of the cartridges. I also find the shave with either the Strait Razor or Shavette comes out much sharper and you can really control it much more than a cartridge razor. I also love the feel of it, once you get used to it there is nothing like a shave from a Shavette or Strait Razor.  I also noticed a reduction of razor bumps but that could just be me, and oh yeah if you have a beard or goatee you can buy some shaving gel so you can see what you are doing and get those lines perfect.

The Cons Of Using A Straight Razor or Shavette

There are of course some cons that come with using a Straight Razor or Shavette and one of those is that there is a considerable learning curve to using those tools. You should really take your time while learning by reading or watching some "how-to" articles or videos, so you can keep your cuts to a minimum. You'll get used to it in time but no need to rush it. There is also a prep time in using these tools such as warming your face with a hot towel and/or getting your shaving cream all nice and fluffy. These next cons are more for the Shavette but you really have to be careful changing the blades out and disposing of the blades because even if they are dull for shaving they are still very sharp. I would recommend a blade bank or a blade disposal case if you are going to use a Shavette because they can hold a whole lot of used blades so that you don't have used blades all over the place or just thrown in the trashcan (yikes).

Conclusion

In conclusion, I believe that the way of the Straight Razor or Shavette is the right way to go for me at least. It has a few cons but the positives are so nice from saving money to that clean shave feel, and once you get used to it the lines you can make with them are so nice and clean, So I think I'm going to stay with my Shavette. If you're looking for a good starting Shavette I got one for you!

The Facón Professional Vintage Straight Edge Barber Razor is a great Shavette that has many different looks so you can find the one that fits you.

Pros

Cons

The wood handle doesn't slip

Hard to replace the blade

Black Metal

Wood seems a little rough

Comfortable Grip

Summary

The form is very good and I like it with the black metal because the regular metal always seems to hit the light just right so it blinds me while I'm trying to shave. The grip is very comfortable to me as well I just wish it was a tad bit slimmer. Even when the wood handle is wet I still have a very firm grip on it and am not afraid of slippage. It does have a couple of rough points though such as the blade replacement mechanism on the razor is a little tough to open and close so be careful when you have to do that. Also, the wood is a little rough on the handle I wish they would have sanded it down a little more. If you are looking for a great starter or just a great Shavette I think the Facón is a great choice for the start of your journey into the wilds of Shavette and Straight Razors!!!
