West Bend Percolator

I love my coffee! It's one of those rituals that helps me get motivated to meet the day! I've always been one to tinker and find new ways to enjoy and brew my favorite beverage. When I stumbled upon the West Bend Percolator I got excited, I've always loved using a percolator and with this electric percolator, it seemed that it would be much easier to use. Just a plug and go kind of thing. This however means this is not a percolator I would bring camping because you need an outlet and electricity but it's great for the house!

How To Use This Percolator

This is a quick guide on how to use the West Bend Percolator:

  1. Take everything out of the percolator

  2. Use clean crisp clean water and fill to the desired level (they have a water level inside the handle)

  3. Use whichever coffee filter that fits or none is up to you but they do say that filters help keep oils and grinds at bay

  4. According to your water level the manual will tell you their guide on how much coffee you should use but this is entirely up to you ( A Coarser Grind is recommended)

  5. Cover the basket with the spreader top

  6. Put the circular end of the stem into the circular groove at the bottom of the pitcher. If it is not placed right the water may not percolate

  7. Put the coffee basket on to the stem then put the cover on top of the percolator (you can watch the percolating process through the little plastic top)

  8. Plug it in and wait till the ready light turns on

  9. Enjoy and don't forget to unplug when you're done!

For more information please look at the user manual that comes with the product and please read all the safeguards before first use!

The Good And The Bad

West Bend Percolator

The things that doesn't strike my fancy with the West Bend is that you have no control over how long it cooks so if you want a stronger cup your outta luck you're just going to have to enjoy it the way it came, and on that note it does seem to make a softer cup of joe. That however is one's preference, if they like a weaker or bolder cup of coffee. Another negative is that it does not have a power switch so with every use you're going to have to remember to completely unplug it from the wall. Then there is the issue that it doesn't have an auto-off feature at least not one that I have found, so please do not forget about it because it will just stay on all day which could be dangerous.

West Bend Percolator Water Level

The things I love about the West Bend Peculator is that it's plug and go, which means you don't have to worry about over-brewing your coffee just add your water and coffee then plug it in. Easy Peasy! then there is that nice little water level measurement they put on the inside of the handle as well as on in the inside of the percolator giving you two ways to measure. The boldness of the coffee is a bit on the lighter side but I feel like I enjoy that a wee bit more than a swift kick in the head from a really strong cup of joe.

How Does The Coffee Percolator Work

The Coffee Percolator used to be the most widely used coffee brewer of modern times until the introduction of the drip coffee machine. The way it works is you have water in the bottom that gets heated and then gets pushed up through the stem and spurts out the top. Once that process begins, the water will seep through the spreader on top of the basket and soaking the coffee and then dripping back into the bottom of the percolator. The longer this process is allowed to go on the stronger the coffee gets! So if you are looking for a bolder more full cup of coffee I would recommend the stovetop percolators because you have more control of the brewing process.

Cleaning

The Cleaning is rather easy just make sure while you clean never immerse the percolator itself in water but clean it with warm soapy water and clean the outside with a damp cloth. The stem, top cover, basket, and spreader can be put on the top rack of the dishwasher and cleaned that way for easy cleaning. Don't forget to give it a good cleaning every once in a while with about 60 oz half water and half vinegar, then let it sit there for about 15 minutes according to the manual.

Final Thoughts

The West Bend Percolator may just become one of the ways I brew coffee regularly on the days I have for relaxing! I will still probably stick to my drip coffee machine for days I'm on the go because it is a bit more convenient (and I'm afraid of forgetting about it and leaving the percolator on), but I really like the coffee that The West Bend Percolator makes. The West Bend Percolator is a great addition to my coffee brewers and one I believe will be in constant use at my abode!
